Proven Technology for Stormwater
The STORMFIX® System, a proprietary rainwater treatment system, was developed by J. Mitsak & Associates during 2002-2005 to address metals such as copper, chromium and arsenic that are often found in stormwater runoff.
The STORMFIX® System, developed with the assistance of a confidential client, uses metallic filtration to chemically alter the dissolved metal compounds through a series of “reductive” reactions. These reactions change the metals to insoluble compounds which are filtered from the stormwater. Designed with the wood preserving industry in mind, the first full scale operation was installed in 2005 to treat a 35 acre drainage area and has been in continuous operation since. During 2016, additional STORMFIX® capacity was installed and is now treating over 50 acres, reducing metal concentrations in thousands of gallons of runoff during each rain event.
Technical Information
The STORMFIX® System has been shown to consistently remove the majority of copper, chromium and arsenic from stormwater, as verified by years of monitoring data. Approved by the regulatory agency, its operation is virtually maintenance free, only requiring periodic change out of the reactive media. The lasting power of the media is dependent on a number of factors; operational experience indicates that the media can last up to 12-15 months before replacement. Testing of the media has shown that it can be disposed of through a metal recycler since the media does not exhibit any hazardous waste characteristics.
J. Mitsak & Associates’ design and construction capabilities allows the installation of The STORMFIX® System in a timely, cost effective manner. The system can:
- Achieve ultra-low levels of copper;
- Reduce chromium to non-detectable concentrations;
- Address arsenic, consistently below any regulatory guideline;
- Operate without daily, weekly or even monthly maintenance, and
- Be installed in a relatively short time frame, since components are readily available.
